August 2011
Dear Parents/ Caregivers,
We are having a powhiri and hangi as part of the Senior Syndicate Inquiry Unit on Wednesday the 10th of August 2011. As custom we wish to extend an invitation to the wider school whanau and community to be part of this.
The powhiri will begin at 12.30pm in front of the hall. This will be followed by the lifting of the hangi about 1pm outside Room 8. After that we will enjoy the hangi kai together.
As you can imagine this needs a bit of organising and a lot of peeled vegetables.
On Monday the 8th of August each family will receive a tinfoil plate/s for your whanau to put your own hangi food in. You will need to have the vegetables peeled. This needs to be returned to school with your child’s name and room number on top. It will then be stored and later put in the hangi on Wednesday morning at about 8.30am.
Types of food suitable for putting in a hangi are:
Meat (chicken, beef, lamb)
Vegetables: potato, kumara, pumpkin, carrot
We will provide plastic knives and forks and serviettes.
Thank you for your support.

Term 3
Room 9 Class Newsletter
Term 3 2011
Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for your wonderful support with the production last term. So many of you did so much behind the scenes to make it such a wonderful experience for the students. They had two very big terms so hopefully both they and you have had a good break from the school routine.
Room 9 Programme for Term 3 will be:
Maths:
For numeracy we will be covering fractions, percentages and decimals
The strands work will explore area, perimeter, volume and capacity.
Religious Education:
The first week we will look at traditional prayer for the Prayer Strand. Later we will focus on the Sacrament and Church Strands.
Literacy:
Reading: We are working on key words, the comprehension skill of being able to infer (read between the lines), and summarise a text. We will use one text for the whole week. Therefore the books the children are bringing home are not the ones we have read in class. The books they bring home are for enjoyment and to help them get reading mileage. On Fridays the students will be studying an author of their choice.
Writing process: We will be using the persuasive and instruction formats.
Oral Language: We will be presenting a speech and later in the term a mihi.
Inquiry:
This terms Unit for the year is an integrated one that explores: “Why and how do people preserve food?” The emphasis is on Science for this Unit. As part of this unit we will have a hangi, which the whole school will be invited to participate in at lunchtime on Wednesday the 10th of August. More information about this will come out this week. You can follow our learning discoveries and decision making on our blogsite http://room9shsinv.blogspot.com/
Physical Education / Health:
This term we will focus on Swing and Rotation of our bodies. Later in the term we will use gymnastic equipment for this. Fitness this term will be Jump Jam. We have PE on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. (These are the only two days they are to wear sports uniform unless they have a note or there is a special event.)
The Arts
We will be exploring drawing and dyeing techniques used in other cultures. The students will explore the world of musicians on a virtual online field trip. They will experience Soul, Jazz and Classical music. Meet a variety of professional musicians including home-grown vocalists and members of the CSO as they discover that there is more to a musician's life than meets the eye.
Homework
10-20mins of reading
10 mins Basic Facts (Doubles, halves, timetables, and basic facts up to 50.)
Spelling: The tests will be on Fridays and new words given that day too. Day 4 of their spelling book is to be completed by Mondays and returned to school for marking.
Library
Our library day will be Fridays.
Student Teacher
This term we will once again have Mrs Michelle Ryland a Third Year Teacher’s College Student working in Room 9 on Mondays and she has a five week posting beginning the third week of term. I work closely with her and all her planning is seen and approved by me before she teaches. At the end of day we review what has been taught, classroom behaviour, etc. If you have any queries about this please feel free to contact me.
Release
I will be released to do my Senior Management work on Fridays. We are lucky enough to have Mrs Cimone Page doing this release. This will provide continuity for the class. Mrs Page will carry on with the normal class programme.
