Dear Parents,
I am really excited to be teaching your children this year.
At present there are 29 Year 6 students in the class.
Room 9 Programme for Term 1 will be:
Maths:
For numeracy we
will be covering addition and subtraction knowledge and strategy work,
multiplication and division knowledge
The strands work
will be data collection and graphing from statistics and time and length from measurement.
Religious
Education:
The first week we will look at the charism of Sacred Heart
School and then we will focus on the God Strand. Mrs Page will teach the prayer
strand. We will also celebrate the Liturgical Events of Lent and Holy Week.
Literacy:
Reading: We are working on main ideas, key words and
locating information in the texts. These will be linked to our Inquiry Unit. We
use one text for the whole week. Therefore the books the children are bringing
home are not the one we have read in class. The books they bring home are for
enjoyment and to help them get reading mileage.
Writing process: We will be using the personal recount and
report formats to communicate our ideas about our Inquiry Unit.
Inquiry:
This year the idea underpinning all our Inquiry units is
“Systems”. Our first Unit for the year is an integrated one that explores: What turns my
brain on? As part of this unit we will be looking at the
following concepts:
1.
People learn in different ways
2.
Our environment can affect our learning.
3.
We can make decisions about our health, our social needs and learning needs.
4.
My actions affect others.
5.
We have routines to manage our learning
You can follow our discoveries and decision making on our
blogsite http://blogs.shsinv.school.nz/room9/
Physical Education
/ Health:

Fitness: this term
we will be working on aerobic fitness with timed runs. The students will keep
records of these. They need their sports shoes EVERYDAY. Girls are to wear
shorts under their pinafores.
The Arts:
Visual Arts: We will create stylized kahu huruhuru (feather cloaks) using the mediums of paint
and crayon.
Music: The focus will be on exploring music through
listening to different types of music.
Homework
Homework consists of:
10-20 minutes of
reading.
The students will keep their own reading log and this will
be checked on Fridays. Please sign it on Thursday nights. (It is their
responsibility to fill this out and then to make sure it is signed by both you
and then by Mrs Page on Fridays.)
10 mins Basic
Facts
Either the Basic Facts cards ( These are given out during
the Knowledge lesson for the week), Alien Basic Facts or E-ako
Spelling:
The tests will be on Fridays and new words given that day
too.
Jottings/Homework
The students will bring a jottings book home occasionally
to make some notes for the next day. It must come back to school the next
day.
Religious
Education
The students will bring their RE book home occasionally to
either complete or share some work. It must come back to school the next
day.
It is my expectation that ALL students will complete the
above homework every night as it helps them develop the work ethic necessary
for Secondary School. They must also have their home folder with these books in
it at school EVERY day. This homework is their responsibility.
Library
Our library day will be Friday .
Release
I will be released to do my Senior Management and CRT work
on Fridays. We are lucky enough to have Mrs Cimone Page doing this release.
This will provide continuity for the class. Mrs Page will carry on with the
class programme as designated by me on Fridays.

Camp
We go to Stewart
Island this year. The dates are the 29th – 31st October.
As I need to book
accommodation and the ferry crossings I need to have firm numbers of the
parents that wish to go on this camp. The cost for parents will be about $263.
I cannot give you accurate figures for this till I have made bookings. I also
want to apply for some grants. Please fill out the form below if you wish to go
on camp. We do not limit the number of parents going but need a firm commitment
from you because of the bookings on ferries and accommodation costs.
