WRITING
You can help your child by getting them to practice writing diffferent types of sentences. Examples are shown below.
Types of Sentences

Simple Sentence

The cat sat on the mat

Compound Sentence

My dog is not popular with the neighbours. My dog scares the postman away.

My dog is not popular with the neighbours because s/he scares the postman away.

Complex Sentences

The cat sat on the mat.

The cat sat on the mat so that he could curl up and go to sleep.

The girl walked into the classroom.

As the girl, with flaming red hair and freckles on her nose, walked into the classroom, all heads turned to stare at her.

Writing at Home.
Lots of reading by, with and to your child: of a variety of books.
Read books to or with your child
Talking books ( from Library)
Give your child lots of experiences: going to beach, park, baking, building huts, sport, art….
Your child might like to keep a diary or they could put their spelling words into sentences.
(Try just one word in a variety of sentence lengths. Make it a challenge - who can write the shortest, longest or most detailed sentence!)

Year 6 Camp 2010

YEAR 6 CAMP 2010

16th of September
Dear Parents,

As you know the Year 6 students will be away on camp at Bannockburn from the 15th to the 19th of November. (5 days and 4 nights). There is a lot of planning; costing and organisation that goes into this and so the following costs are an estimate. Hopefully this may answer some initial questions parents have.

Parent Help.
I need at least 5 parents each day of the camp. As I am the only teacher going it is important that the parents who come are on site at night. We will be cooking all the meals so it is expected that the parent helpers will help with these and supervising duties. If you can come for part of the camp or want to swap with your partner half way through that is fine. The adults will be charged for food, accommodation and if travelling on the bus that cost as well. Though camp is a lot of fun it also requires lots of energy. I will need lots of help from those parents who come.

I have attached a menu and timetable for the 5days. If your child has allergies or there is some difficulty with the menu please let me know.

I also need the medical consent filled out and returned to school. If there is anything you are concerned about please e-mail or phone me. E-mails are preferable. klieshout@shsinv.school.nz

I have also added the camp cost, as you can see I am trying to bring the cost down. It is for 5 days so is a bit more costly. This is to be paid to the office the week before camp. If cost is a factor contact Mr Forde or myself as it is the school policy that all children get this opportunity.

Could you please indicate if you will be on camp (staying on site) and what days.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name________________________

I will be there for the whole camp.

I will be on camp from__________ to ____________

I will be travelling in the bus. I will be taking my own car.

Thank you

Home Reading - Author Circle
This term we are launching “ author circles” in Room 9. This letter is to help explain what these are all about.
The purpose of author circles is to enhance a love of reading and to share books by authors they have enjoyed with other readers.
Students are invited to choose an author or book they have enjoyed reading.
They can select these books from books they have at home, the school library or the public library.
They read the book! There will be silent reading time scheduled into each days programme, but the book will need to come home to be read as well. THIS WILL BE THE STUDENTS HOME READING. I expect them to read for 10-15 minutes EVERY night. It is important for the students to choose wisely and keep going
Books need to be at school on Friday for discussion time. This is where author circles really come alive! Students will discuss the book using some guiding questions with others and try to sell their book to them. The students will also have other activities with Mrs Fortune to do about their author or book.

All books must be treated with care and respect, and we would like you to bring your reading folders to school to keep these books in good condition. In order to really get into your book, it would b good to bring it to school each day to read during silent reading time.

We are looking forward to some really good discussion times.
