Term 2 2010 Room 9 Class Newsletter
Dear Parents,
The children all seem to have had a great break and are refreshed for a busy and exciting term.
Room 9 Programme for Term 1 will be:
Maths:
For numeracy we will be finishing our addition and subtraction and commencing multiplication and division.
The strands work will explore aspects of geometry.
Religious Education:
The first week we will look at the liturgical season of Easter. Mrs Fortune will explore the prayer strand with the class. Later we will focus on the Holy Spirit and Jesus Strands. We will also celebrate the Liturgical Events of Ascension Thursday and Penetcost.
Literacy:
Reading: We are working on the types of questions that help comprehension and locating information in the texts. We will use one text for the whole week. Therefore the books the children are bringing home are not the ones we have read in class. The books they bring home are for enjoyment and to help them get reading mileage.
Writing process: We will be using the report format and continuing to look at the development of editing skills.
Oral Language/ Current Events: Once a term your child will work with a group of children on our current events blog http://weeklynewshsinv.blogspot.com/ which they will present to the class on Fridays. This will be part of our on-going oral language programme. We will also be exploring moving images and the students will be creating their own moving image clips.
Inquiry:
We will be finishing off our car park study and sending our report to the Board of Trustees and the Parish Council.
Our second Unit for the year is an integrated one that explores: Why people around the world participate in cultural activities? You can follow our discoveries on our blogsite http://room9shsinv.blogspot.com/

Fitness: this term we will be working on aerobic fitness with Jump Jam and skipping EVERYDAY.

Library
Our library day will be Fridays.
Release
I will be released to do my Senior Management work on Fridays. We are lucky enough to have Mrs Fortune doing this release. This will provide continuity for the class. Mrs Fortune will carry on with the normal class programme.
Home Reading - Author Circle
This term we are launching “ author circles” in Room 9. This letter is to help explain what these are all about.
The purpose of author circles is to enhance a love of reading and to share books by authors they have enjoyed with other readers.
Students are invited to choose an author or book they have enjoyed reading.
They can select these books from books they have at home, the school library or the public library.
They read the book! There will be silent reading time scheduled into each days programme, but the book will need to come home to be read as well. THIS WILL BE THE STUDENTS HOME READING. I expect them to read for 10-15 minutes EVERY night. It is important for the students to choose wisely and keep going
Books need to be at school on Friday for discussion time. This is where author circles really come alive! Students will discuss the book using some guiding questions with others and try to sell their book to them. The students will also have other activities with Mrs Fortune to do about their author or book.
All books must be treated with care and respect, and we would like you to bring your reading folders to school to keep these books in good condition. In order to really get into your book, it would b good to bring it to school each day to read during silent reading time.
We are looking forward to some really good discussion times.
